MARINERS MATCH RESULTS #17

The Lady Mariners ended their season on a high note with both teams having great wins over Werribee on Saturday,

The First Nine had an 8-1 victory over Werribee, with Pitcher Emma Binks throwing an unbelievable game allowing only 1 safe hit, no earned runs & striking out 3 hitters to keep Werribee in check the entire game, in fact she retired 12 hitters straight from the fourth inning to the seventh inning.

The Mariner bats were led by Emma Binks also, she collected 2 hits for the game including a 3-run Double, Deanne Lee & Amanda Napier also collected 2 hits each, Daniella Garofolo also hit well picking up a 3-run single to centre field.

The Second Nine waited until the last game of the season to produce their best game for the season defeating Werribee 11-10 at home on Saturday, in fact they waited until 2 out in the bottom of the last inning to clinch their first win for the season, in a great last inning the Port girls came from 3 runs behind to rally for a great win that was sealed with an RBI single to centre field by Lisa Culph.

Amy Fyfield picked up the win throwing 4 innings allowing only 2 hits & 1 earned run, the Port bats where swing hot amassing 17 hits with every batter getting at least 1 hit, Monique Maes the best of them picking up 4 hits, Amy Fyfield, Lauren Cummings, Kelly Medland, Kahtlin Morris & Sam Rossiter each collecting 2 safe hits

Also a special note & congratulations to Emma Binks who just arrived back from Asia last Friday where she represented Australia on the Aussie Hearts Tour in which Emma’s team went through un-defeated to win the tournament, Emma pitched several games including a no-hitter, well done to Emma & the Aussie Hearts on a great trip

Mariner Matt Swings a Hot Bat

14 year old Matthew Morris is enjoying a fine season in his first year of season baseball, holding his spot in the First Nine fielding at 2nd base & batting at number 2 in the line-up, he is showing no signs that he is playing out of his depth.

Well the month of January has proved to be a great month for Matthew, as he has just got back from the Under 16 National Championships where he represented Victoria for the 3rd straight year.
Matt's team was very competitive throughout the tournament finishing in 6th place, Matthew playing in his first year of Under 16s had a great tournament on a personal level he amassed 16 hit giving him a batting average of .533 which was the 3rd best overall for the tournament, he finished top 5 in a number of categories including Slugging percentage, RBI's & One Base percentages.
He hit the ball as hard as anyone in the tournament collecting 3 doubles, 2 triples and on the final day of the tournament he smashed a massive Grand Slam Homerun over the Centre Field fence.

His hot bat continued when he got back playing with the Mariners where he got 2 hits and 2 RBI's including a game winning hit in the bottom of the 9th to give the Mariners a much needed win over Waverley.

He then backed up again this weekend collecting 4 hits against Footscray.

Everyone at the Club is very proud and we congratulate Matthew's on his achievements so far and at how well he performed at Nationals, we couldn’t be more impressed with the way Matthew goes about his game, we all look forward to watching him in the upcoming years as he strives for even further success in baseball.

Matthew’s brother Sam also represented Victoria in Under 18s
