Brief History

In the late 1920s, Sam Connor, Perc Mahoney, Stan Jenkins and Rev. A. P. Dawson, saw a need to introduce a new recreational activity to the community that involved family, fun, friendly rivalry and an alternative to league football. It was for this reason that in 1929, the local Baptist Church formed the Port Melbourne Baseball Club that has since moved from strength to strength.

In 1932, the Club was one of 11 that played in curtain raisers to football establishing its baseball name. After 48 years, the Port Melbourne Baseball Club, having received its reputable name, was awarded its own clubrooms and field.

In 1999, PMBC embarked on a new era with the introduction of a multi-year Strategic Plan, aimed to bring the club from a regular Division 3 participant to a competitive Division 1 Club. Business principles have been implemented to ensure stability and then growth is achieved. Initiatives so far include renaming committee positions, providing specific duties to committee members, re-branding the Club as the “Mariners”, introducing a Teeball Program and increased promotion and sponsorship efforts.
